RAF hand Cessford has chance to impress at Worcestershire

The signing of the fast bowler Graeme Cessford by Worcestershire at the age of 29 will come as no surprise after his sound performances at club level and for the RAF and Combined Services over the past few years.

Cessford has been granted elite athlete status by the RAF to allow him time for cricket. It is gratifying to see players pulled out of club ranks to try their luck on the professional circuit, and his switch to full-time in 2013 would come as little surprise to the Club Cricket Conference.

At the Vine Lane ground at Uxbridge in 2011 Cessford inspired the Combined Services to a one-wicket win over the CCC. The Conference had taken control after 51 by opener Jonathan Walford (Brentwood) had set up a 50-over score of 239-8. The Havant off-spinner Richard Hindley, with four wickets, had the Services reeling, but Cessford's 39 off 40 balls changed the picture completely and set up a narrow win with two balls remaining. Cessford, part of a strong Chester-le-Street side, had been the most economical bowler with 1-28 off 10 overs.

In 2012 Hexham-born Cessford caught the eye in a handful of Worcestershire 2nd XI games with bat and ball and was invited for winter training for the 2013 season. Squadron Leader Sally Varley said that his elite athlete status allowed him time to "realise and develop" his cricket potential through his opportunity at Worcestershire. "In addition," she added, "the Royal Air Force has exceptionally adjusted Corporal Cessford's employment for a year to include a public relations engagement role."

Cessford commented: "I'm delighted to have signed for Worcestershire for the forthcoming 2013 season. I'd like to extend a massive thank you to the Royal Air Force, the RAF Sports Board, and Worcestershire CCC for giving me this fantastic opportunity."
