Meet Your MP Day: Saturday 6th July

MEDIA RELEASE:  Immediate

The League Cricket Conference, Club Cricket Conference and Midlands Club Cricket Conference are asking cricket clubs to invite their local MP, councillors and press to join them on a match day to hear at firsthand what problems clubs face and detail the significant benefits they provide to the community.

In a unique joint initiative the League Cricket Conference, Club Cricket Conference and Midlands Club Cricket Conference are joining forces to encourage cricket clubs around the country to make a real impression on their community decision-makers.

The project has designated Saturday 6 July as the ‘Meet Your MP’ day and it is hoped that every MP in England and Wales will be invited to their local club to hear at first hand what the club does within its community, and what it could do better with a little additional support.

“Clubs need support,” says Alf Langley, chairman of Club Cricket Conference, “and its not just in financial terms. Clubs are the centre of their community and provide a vital element in the structure of the community. Engaging with schools by providing volunteer coaches takes cricket to the majority of youngsters in this country, encouraging and supporting these club volunteers is essential”

“Clubs need to blow their own trumpet.” thinks Bill Tansell, chairman of the Midlands Club Cricket Conference. “A greater understanding of the benefits and problems of clubs can do nothing but good for clubs and the game in general”

“We would urge clubs to get involved in this initiative,” says Neil Edwards, secretary of the League Cricket Conference. “By acting together we can make a real impact on the decision-makers with significant benefits to clubs and the game as a whole”.

The initiative will be co-ordinated by the Conferences who will produce a summary of its achievements after the event.

Notes for Editors:

The Club Cricket Conference (CCC) was established in 1915 and is the oldest and largest organisation representing the interests of club cricket in the country.

The modern-day organisation is helping the ECB to further the cause of recreational cricket and, above all, to increase the number of adult players and to embrace the wider cricket family.

It is also continuing to provide a structure offering opportunities to players to participate at the highest standards short of the professional game.  This is achieved by a programme of new and traditional summer fixtures against strong opposition for men’s, women’s and U21/25 XIs and by mounting and hosting a series of tour to and from ICC affiliate countries.  Recent fixture and tours have included Tanzania, Argentina and Denmark and Counnty 2nd XIs.

The CCC has been working on initiatives to heighten interest in club cricket and maximise ground usage - from parks to Focus Clubs. The traditional work on behalf 1,000 member clubs and leagues remains the fixture bureau, the handbook, organising two tiers of inter-league competition, setting up tours and arranging high-quality representative matches, including a chance to play at Lord's against MCC.

The Conference is now looking beyond its established heartlands in the South of England and is working closely with the ECB and the Midlands Club Cricket and League Cricket conferences to establish a wider range of support measures for clubs and park teams to create a stronger and more representative body in support of the recreational game.
