Match report by Andrew Tutt.
Kent 2nd Xl elected to bat, after winning the toss on a breezy overcast day at the newly developed Beckenham ground.
Tight bowling from Osborne, Hussain and Anderson in the early stages kept Kent relatively quiet in the power play overs with both openers being dismissed.
With the introduction of spin, added with some good fielding, the CCC were able to dismiss most of the middle and lower order, including the 3 wickets of experienced 1st Xl players, Ball, Harmison and Blake, just when all 3 were threatening a big score. The Kent side were in a spot of bother at 152-7 with trialist Joe Joyce at the crease and only the bowlers to follow.
The 8th wicket partnership of 61 by Joyce and Hunn, saw the last 3 wickets put on 116 runs from the final 15 overs with Kent posting and unlikely at one point 268-9, Joyce finishing on 77*. Pick of the bowlers for the CCC, Payne 2-48 and Southgate 3-53.
A mention must be made to the ‘Jordan Silk’ like catch by Queenslander, Sam Heazlett, that left 1 batsman and a number of spectators open-mouthed.
Openers Prabhakar (30) and skipper Ballard (64) then produced a fine opening partnership of 94 in 17 overs before the latter was first out. Both openers handled the pace and bounce of Hunn expertly. Again the introduction of spin had an immediate impact with 3 wickets falling in quick time to leave the CCC 118-4 at drinks.
Rebuilding was needed; this came from Heazlett (16), Hussain (40) and Payne (36), and with 10 overs to go the CCC were in a great position at 201-5 needing a further 68 for victory.
Unfortunately as is often seen the taking of a power play and a little bit of naivety saw our last 5 wickets go down for the addition of only 28 runs, the Kent side running out victors by 39 runs.
