Waltham retain Lord's Taverners title at La Manga

The Essex club Waltham won the Lady Taverners Charity T20 tournament at La Manga for the second year in succession after seeing off testing opposition, most notably Sandiacre Town, the ECB National Club champions.

The T20 event was part of a four-day golf and cricket charity extravaganza at the award-winning sports resort in Spain, raising a total of £12,000 for the Lord’s Taverners. Waltham, the Conference Cup winners of 2013, arrived in Spain as pre-event favourites and faced five other teams in the three-day competition – Sandiacre, Barking, UK United Asians, Chester Boughton Hall and a Spanish Academy side.

Surprisingly Waltham lost their opening game to the Spanish Academy, but they recovered and finished top, inspired by their Stevenage spinner Syed Kazmi, voted bowler of the tournament. They went on to beat a Lord’s Taverners Legends XI by 10 runs. The celebrities included former internationals Neal Radford, Andy Caddick, Chris Cowdrey and Hamish Marshall.

With La Manga as an exotic example, golf and cricket competitions form the backbone of Lord’s Taverners fund-raising for recreational cricket, especially youth and disability causes.
