Match report:
MCC: 411 for 8 wkts (50 overs).
CCC: 93 all out (30.3 overs)
Last year saw our inaugural match against the MCC ; inaugural in all respects as it was the first time we had ever fielded a Women's side. That match resulted in a narrow loss to the MCC.
Whether it was the closeness of last season's game or unexpected good availability this year the MCC were taking no chances. Awaiting their arrival at the Hayes(Kent )ground where we were splendidly entertained, we became a little nervous as one after another England player turned up. And they were not playing for us! Sue Benson of Finchley, who captained our side very capably indeed made her first strategic decision when winning the toss and that was to insert the opposition.
After two early wickets and a glimmer of hope we were treated (the spectators that is) to a superb display of batting of the very highest quality from Sarah Taylor who is The England wicketkeeper and opening bat. Starting carefully against the seam and spin combination of Hannah Jelfs and Rebecca Silk who bowled very tidily indeed, Sarah provided an object lesson of how to build an innings. After reaching 50 she accelerated effortlessly and mercifully retired after scoring 151. It is no surprise to those of us who saw her innings that she has been nominated as ICC world player of the year.
Our girls deserve great credit for not giving up in the face of this onslaught and there were very promising performances from Rebecca Silk, Samantha Wright, Anna Swann, & Susie Rowe.
Facing a mammoth score of 411 in 50 overs was always going to be beyond us. Susie Rowe, our England player battled hard and well until with wickets falling around her she was dismissed for an excellent 48.
We eventually lost by 318 runs, a result which led to the suicide of the CCC match manager shortly after the game!
