Match report:
CCC won by 94 runs.
CCC - 182 for 2 wkts (40 overs)
[Alice Richards 92, Hannah Smith 62*]
Combined Services - 88 all out (38.2 overs)
CCC lost the toss and was invited to bat first on a wet wicket in a 40 overs per side match. Uncertain of what to expect from our players, most of whom were playing together for the first time, nerves were soon settled by a high class opening partnership between Alice Richards and Hannah Smith, who settled in against the Services bowling and made steady and unruffled progress. Combined Services themselves were coming off the back of three days Inter Services competition and were therefore better prepared for competition cricket than CCC.
An opening stand therefore, of 169 was an outstanding performance. Both openers represent their counties, Hannah for Hertfordshire and Alice for Kent. In Alice Richards, there is a player of true quality and it was she who was dismissed first, for an excellent 92 that contained shots all around the park and drew admiring comments from all those at the ground.
Hannah proceeded serenely to an unbeaten 62 and provided the rock of the innings as CCC closed on 182-2. It was a very encouraging performance with the bat.
Following lunch, CCC took the field under the astute and motivating captaincy of Sue Benson (Bucks CCC). Sam Wright and Jade Elphick opened the attack and it was quite clear that they had the measure of the Combined Services top order. Both bowled well with Jade picking up two early wickets with good inswing, resulting in clean bowling Vaggers and Kelly.
As the match progressed it was clear that CCC had a very strong unit on the field. All the bowlers brought something to the game, including the mysteries of left arm chinamen from a young Alice Bowen. Our fielding was of high intensity and runs were stifled as the bowlers applied pressure with challenging spells throughout the session.
As a consequence Combined Services were never let off the hook and through Elphick, Richards, Anna Swan, Sophie and Alice Bowen, CCC skittled CS out for 88 to claim victory by 94 runs.
