We under-estimated Combined Services last year, so the cry-on match manager was determined to make sure a strong team represented the CCC.
It is not always true that when you reconnaisance a ground in winter, that it will be ideal the first week of September ; but Gerrards Cross CC was.
Both captains would have batted first, as the toss fell in favour of Combined Services.
It is always pleasing when your opening seamers bowl an ideal length & line. Wes Morrick has been doing that for a 'hundred years', but it was Ed Lowe who capture the early first 2 wickets, with catches to mid-on, were captain, Sam Burge, did not have to move. Wes got the 3rd with a rising delivery off 'the ridge'.
A positive partnership took the score to 91, where-apon 4 wickets fell regularly. As a non-spinning left armer, the match manager was most excited by the stumping off Joe Ellis-Grewal. An 8th wicket partnership took the score beyond 200, but all CCC bowlers did a terrific job.
Aaron West showed no nerves facing a spinner at the top (after both he & Jon Walford fell to spinners at the start of Brentwood's innings in The Conference Cup Final). It was more a case of 'exercising the devil'. Very pleasing for the CCC to have 2 under 21 players put on 142 for the 1st wicket. Waqas Hussain has a MCC YC contract for 2013, and Aaron is 'the batter' in Essex, with outings for the Unicorns this year. Aaron went one further to score the one & only century for the CCC this season. Slough CC stalwart, Bobby Sher, 'burglared' his way to no. 3., and did his reconnaisance for Slough's promotion match v Gerrards Cross CC, with 3 off 6's into the tennis courts.
