Match report:
Game 1: CCC 151 for 5 wkts. France 154 for 4 wkts (19.4 overs).
Game 2: France 169 for 7 wkts. CCC 171 for 2 wkts (18.2 overs).

Game 1
Batting first the Conference lost the early wicket of Sajid Ali after which Richard Wharton and Waqas Hussain took the score to 47. Two wickets then fell in quick succession after which the scoring was controlled by some good French bowling and some naive batting despite a fine 42 from Tom Phillippe. A final total of 151/6 of 20 overs appeared under par in the conditions, and so it proved when France won the game by 6 wickets. A fine opening stand of 79 set the tempo and although the game was won with only two balls to spare France were always in control with Thavalingam making a fine 51 at the top of the order. A little more thought and planning was necessary by the Conference XI if the result was to be reversed in game 2.
Game 2
France batted first and scored steadily throughout their 20 overs with the highlight being the innings of 75 by Batthi which contained a number of innovative shots, particularly the reverse sweep/hit. Wickets fell at regular intervals and despite the final total reaching 169/8 this was a much better bowling/fielding effort by the Conference with the pick of the bowlers being Tahir Kazmi with figures of 3/31 from his 4 overs. Lessons had been learned from the first game and a much more controlled and planned performance with the bat saw the Conference win the game by 8 wickets with 10 balls to spare. Sajid Ali (70), Richard Wharton (33), Waqas Hussain (45 no) and George Stear (8 no) all contributed with the running between wickets much improved to compliment the ‘big shots’ resulting in a comfortable chase. It was pleasing to see the players adjust their approach between games (with some advice from coach Mark Stear) and play to a higher level.

Malcolm Roberts, 6/6/13.
