CCC won by 44 runs.

A wonderful day of weather, and Burnham CC as a great host, greeted the CCC Under 25’s.
Having won the toss CCC skipper Richard Wharton decided to have a bat.
Some very good opening bowling from King and Burden for Bucks showed runs were going to be hard to come by on a very dry wicket.
King picking up 2 wickets in the early opening spell reducing the CC to 2-13. Skipper Richard Wharton and Waqas Hussain showed solid determination and kept the score ticking over with the occasional freeness to strike a boundary as the ball became softer and the wicket harder to score on.
The introduction of slow bowling saw runs even harder to come by with Khan, Rance and Payne bowling 39 overs for 92 runs taking 7 wickets.
Tight bowling and batsmen’s frustrations created a hard fought period where a score of 180 plus seemed a match winning total.
Wharton was dismissed for 36. Caught at mid-wicket form a ball that didn’t come on, whilst Hussain made a well compiled 52 before playing on, and Jamal Francis 27 playing on set the base for a final push.
Unfortunately a regular fall of wickets in seeking quicker runs saw the CCC fall to 8-141 and 170 seemed a long way off.
But Andrew Westphal, with 20, and Joe Ellis-Grewal, with 23, showed great maturity and understanding for the situation and set about batting out the overs and sensibly compiling a great stand of 40 chanceless runs in an 8 over period, which was the to prove the highest scoring rate of the game ironically.
This partnership was also to prove the match winning partnership as the CCC reached a total of 189.

Basil Akram and Andrew Westphal provided a fine opening spell. Akram bowling Morgan first ball of the innings and Westphal claiming 2 wickets reduced Bucks to 3-21 off 11 overs in a fine opening setting the platform for a pressurised middle innings spell.
Joe Ellis-Grewal bowled very well, unlucky not claim more than his 2 wickets in his 10 over spell.
With the Bucks innings wobbling at 7-119 the introduction of Rishi Sharath saw the Bucks innings fall away. Sharath claimed the all-important wicket of Payne for 32 bowled, and with the accuracy and pace at which Sharath bowled, he gained 2 more wickets, finishing with figures of 3-15 to wrap up an end of innings performance.

A fine, grafted, all round performance in all departments saw the CCC gain a well fought victory by 44 runs.

Congratulations and thanks, to all players on both sides and to Burnham CC for its hosting and hospitality for making the day thoroughly enjoyable.

Russell Collard, 12/7/13.
