Elliott Davis London Cricket League win the Sovereign Trophy

Sovereign Trophy Final 2021

By Stan Nicholson

28 August 2021

At the third attempt, the final was played at Valley End CC, on the 25th August between the Caribbean Cup Competition XI and the Elliott Davis London Criicket League.

The first attempt on the 28th July, was ended by a heavy downpour of rain when EDLCL were 185 for 5 in the 37 over. And the second attempt planned for the 10th August was called off the day before, due to a water-logged pitch. Such was the season of 2021 !!

The Elliott Davis London Cricket League batted first, and despite the loss of 4 early wickets, managed with a 121 run partnership between Ahmad Khawaja and Ali Khan, to score an impressive 266 in their 45 overs. Khawaja anchored the innings being sixth out at 229 (the recovery done) with 70 (5 x 4’s, 1 x 6, 102 balls). Khan was the more aggressive, 76 (10 x 4’s, 1 x 6, 63 balls) – a performance that won him the Man-of-the-Match award. David Burton was the pick of the Caribbean Cup bowlers with 3 wickets for 36 runs.

Chasing that sort of total normally requires at least two good partnerships. Something that the top order of the Caribbean Cup team could not do. All their top 5 got into double figures, and then got out. A runout never helps, and against an experienced spin attack, the inevitable happened – all out for 138 in the 32nd over. David Burton top scored with 26, with 4 of the EDLCL bowlers taking 2 wickets each.

The Elliott Davis London Cricket League won by 128 runs. Their third victory in the competition, the other years being in 2015 and 2017.

Sadly for the Caribbean Cup Competition team it was their third defeat in a final, following similar pain in 2016 and 2018.
