Mike Gatting and Phillip DeFreitas, two former Ashes winners, head a list of cricketers taking part in the inaugural Kiss Mix Lord’s Taverners Golf Classic at the La Manga Club in Spain on 12-16 October. There are vacancies for more golfers wishing to take part in this charity tournament, with a team of four costing only Euros 500 per player.
That tempting price excludes flights and transfers but includes a 36-hole stableford competition on La Manga’s South and North courses, four nights in the five-star Hotel La Manga Club Principe Felipe with breakfast, welcome reception, gala dinner with full drinks package and prize-giving with entertainment.
Running alongside the golf will be the four-day Lady Taverners charity cricket T20 tournament. The 10 sides taking part include York CC, winners of the ECB's national club championship -- the Kingfisher Beer Cup -- and Wimbledon CC, the ECB national Twenty20 champions. Competing alongside them will be a team from Spain, Belgium and Switzerland and four from Norway. The club winners will take on a Taverners’ Legends XI, captained by Gatting, in a charity match on the final day if anyone has any energy left. The long weekend is generously sponsored by the drinks firm Kiss Mix.
At this stage the cricketers expected in Murcia include Gatting, DeFreitas, Neal Radford, Gareth Batty and Neil Smith, with Jon Lewis and Steve Kirby as possibles among other well known faces.
