Lloyd Stewart, 59, is described by Baston CC as their "chief engineer" with responsibilities as head groundsman, club liaison officer, roller fixer and mower fixer. So his century in the first weekend of the South Lincolnshire league, the club's first for at least 10 years, proved to be exceptionally popular.
Stewart helped Baston to a nervy 11-run win in their 45-over game at Moulton Harroux 2nd XI, his 72-ball hundred arriving as a complete surprise after a barren 2012 season. This effort at number six was all the more remarkable in that he hurt his knee sprinting for a quick single and needed a runner after reaching his fifty.
His injury persuaded Stewart to look for boundaries. One of his five sixes landed in a garden, and he smashed the final ball over a tree to reach 102. Baston's captain Tim Dyer said: "We’re all delighted for Lloyd getting this ton. He is a legend at this club, and has shown his class today."
