The ECB honoured eight volunteers with outstanding service to cricket awards, known as OSCAs, but the hundreds of people nominated through the counties all deserved the game's gratitude in the 11th year of this NatWest-sponsored 'unsung heroes' scheme. About 400 guests from many cricket clubs attended the presentation lunch at Lord's.
The short-list was chosen from the list of names put forward by clubs and county cricket boards, and their merits were discussed by a panel of representatives from the ECB, Sport England, the Lawn Tennis Association and NatWest. The winners came from varied backgrounds as, for example, the Sri Lankan cricket enthusiast Azam Riyard, who won the 'building partnerships' award for his work at Crawley Eagles CC, helping to bond the local community.
