Jamie Southgate of North Mymms CC, achieved the best bowling performance for a CCC player on a overseas tour for 40 years (& the 2nd best ever), with figures of 5-0-10-7, against Wanderer’s CC, at their ground, Dayrell’s Road, St Michael, Barbados, on Thursday 12th November.
Jamie was bowler number 7 when he started his spell, with Wanderer’s 73/2 after 17 overs. He took his 1st wicket in his 2nd over, 2 in his 3rd over, 1 more in his 4th over, then 3 in his 5th over. Wanderer’s were all out for 102, and the CCC comfortably won the match, albeit with 2 wickets falling with the score at 8 runs, with Aaron West of Brentwood CC batting through for 49 not out.
The best bowling performance by a CCC player on tour was recorded by Johnny Wardle of Forest Hill CC, against Hillston CC, 425 miles west of Sydney, in ‘up-country’ New South Wales, on the 1975 tour ; 10-1-44-8. Forest Hill were a strong London/Kent club at that time, and Wardle, the son of an England player also named Johnny, was a red-head, sometimes fiery, left arm spinner. Jamie, an off spinner, would have been ‘very much at home’ in the 1970’s, with his laid-back personality. An interesting aspect of Wardle’s spell of 10 overs, was that they were bowled in a 40 overs per innings match. Early days of limited overs matches allowed for such ‘irregularities’. Although 5 others have taken 6 wickets in an innings on tour, Sam Mehar’s, 6-6-0-5, against the Australian Old Collegians Vets team on the 1983 tour, will probably never be matched.
